A Few of Mommy's Favorite Things: 3-6 Months

It's time for a quick run down of Mommy's (that's me) favorite items for our 3-6 month old. I said this on the 0-3 month list, please keep in mind that we've had one child and of course all kiddos are different. What worked for Claire may not for other babies, including ours in the years to come! These are just a few things that have been lifesavers or loves of mine over the past three months.

A few milestones that we have embraced and worked through during this time have been rolling (this happened right at 3 months), teething, seasonal allergies and introducing solid foods. This time around it seems like we have a lot more of the little things that we love. Not a lot of gimmicky stuff, just the simple things that made a difference with whatever we were going through at the time.

This list could be summed up into the following categories: Things That Keep Our Baby Safe, Things That Make Our Baby Happy and Things That Help Us All Get a Good Night's Sleep.

Soft Sheets

A little after three months and following Claire learning to roll over, she would only sleep on her tummy. Besides freaking us out on several levels by face planting while sleeping, she would rub her face over and over on the sheets. Her little cheeks began to chafe to the point that I thought they were going to bleed in places. We had what felt like soft flannel sheets, but obviously they were not as soft as we needed. We swapped these out for Sateen Sheets from Babies 'R Us and her cheeks healed in no time. Pottery Barn sheets are great too! Good crib sheets are apparently worth the investment. Lesson learned.

Aden and Anais Sleep Sack

We have two of these and I absolutely love them. At three months we had to swaddle wean because of the little roller. I can't say that the Sleep Sack helped with the weaning process although I suppose it may have to an extent. She wears it for warmth and comfort. We love it because it's lightweight, breathable and made of the same muslin material as her other blankets. Some of the other sleep sacks are made of heavier material. With the unpredictable weather around here, this can be too much. We put her in footy pajamas at night and a onesie during the day to sleep in under the sleep sack. She will usually grab a corner of the bottom material as a comfort while soothing herself to sleep. They're cute too!

Zipper Pajamas

Oh snap! Anyone else feel like PJ's with snaps can be like putting a puzzle together? It feels like calf roping (I have never calf roped a day in my life) and then trying to put pajamas on it. If I miss a snap, Claire will wake up in the morning with a leg completely out. This is why we like pajamas that zip up for this stage. I've heard this is also great when baby learns how to unsnap their PJ's. Thank goodness we are not there yet!

Breathable Mesh Bumper

Bumpers are a controversial topic for many. We had to ask our pediatrcian because Claire would roll and knock her head pretty hard against the side of the crib. Because she rolled early, she didn't have the head control yet to keep her head from going overboard with momentum. Our pedi said we could try a thin bumper and that it would be better than her hitting her head. Plus, at this point she did have enough head control to keep her head up. We opted for the breathable mesh bumpers. No more Noggin Knock Outs. In our case, this was a good solution. We are about to lower her crib mattress and now that she has more head control, we'll either go bumperless or get thinly padded bumpers. Depending on your point of view, either of those could be shocking to you!

Angel Care Monitor

Remember the whole face planting following rolling over I mentioned before? Well, she would face plant in the corner of the crib and go to sleep. Mommy and Daddy did not sleep. I even tried it out myself as a test and I couldn't breathe (not in the corner of the crib, just the face planting part)! We begged and pleaded with her to turn her little head - nope. Have I told you that she's strong willed? 

We decided on getting the Angel Care Monitor that goes underneath the mattress and will sound an alarm that will wake both baby and parents if baby's heart rate doesn't register after 15-20 seconds. It signals a false alarm every once in a while, but it helped us to rest easier. She turns her head now. We sleep. Life is good.

Can you tell that the whole rolling at three months rocked our world a little? Ha!

Nose Frieda

I admit that when you first look at this product it looks absolutely disgusting. "No way I'm doing that!" you might say. And then your baby's nose gets stopped up completely due to a cold or in our case, allergies. You suck it up (literally, I suppose) and you just do it. Claire doesn't love it, but who would like anything stuck up their nose? This worked so much better than the nasal aspirators for us. Along with saline drops, this helped us get through the few weeks of allergies.

Non-scratchy Bibs

I guess it's true what people say: "a good bib is hard to find". What? You don't know anyone who says that? Oh well.During the 3-6 month timeframe we have gone through a lot of bibs. I would say on average that we go through about 5-6 bibs each day, but in the days of major teething we would go through a lot more.

Some of her bibs lost their velcro-ness after a few washes and the corners peeled up and scratched her face or neck. Our favorite bibs are the cheap bibs from Target that come in packs of 12 or so. The velcro continues to work through many washes and although the liner can come undone (did I mention they're cheap?), they do the trick. I also like the ones that snap. Those aren't as cheap, therefore I don't have as many.

Teething toys

Fact: everything becomes a teething toy in the hands of a 3-6 month old. But...toys like Sophie, the Melissa and Doug fish that are mentioned in the previous post and old fashioned teething rings that you can freeze are awesome! It's true. I have genuinely thanked God for Sophie the Giraffe. It's catnip for babies.

Activity mat squares

The majority of the floors in our house are tiled which I have always loved. I'm not a fan of carpet. Then Claire was born. Now I feel like our floor is made of bruises and hospital visits disguised as tile. Thank goodness a friend of ours let us borrow their foam floor tiles. I plan on getting a set of our own as well. We do most of our sitting up in this area. It's all set up for her stunts.

Toys that clip onto things

Don't you love my technical speak? I still have quite picked up the tried and true mommy lingo yet. I'm referring to toys that will clip onto the stroller, the car seat, the walker, the activity gym, etc. You never have to pick them up. It's great.

Nighttime Diapers

During this past month Claire began waking up randomly in the middle of the night with a soaking wet diaper. Two things: first, we increased the size and second, we got the super absorbent nighttime diapers. Not having nighttime diapers is probably something that we should have picked up on a little earlier. Game changer. We sleep. Life is good.

Two things we still love: Aden and Anais blankets and our sound machine.

See? I told you the list was a simple one. I am curious as to what our next list will contain as we're now out of the infant stage. So exciting!

The Six Month Big Girl

I can't believe she's six months. Claire has been a part of our lives for half of a year! 'Precious' doesn't even capture how these last six months have been for our family of three. Before I go all mushy, I better give you the six month scoop:

Eating

We've come along way from the avocado of last month. So far we've tried sweet potatoes, peas, carrots and bananas. Oh, and we just tried a frozen peach in a mesh teether. Does that count? Anyway, she loves peas and carrots and is warming up to bananas. She is now actually swallowing her food - not just tasting it.

She still drinks four bottles a day, but now is more on the 5 oz. per bottle instead of the full 7 oz. Although, today as a mature six month old she has eaten 7-8 oz. bottles. Maybe she heard that she is a big girl now.

Claire also eyes and tries to reach for anything that Joey and I are eating. It's a good reminder that as her parents we've got to get our good eating habits back. Eek!

Sleep

Since we last chatted there has been a time change - Spring Forward to be exact. Apparently kids are supposed to sleep "later". This was not our experience. It's not that big of a deal, but Claire wakes up between 6:15-6:30 AM instead of 7:00 AM. We have no business complaining about sleep as we get plenty for parents of a six month old, but just wanted to share the update.

She is still napping three times a day with a 1.5 hour nap in the morning and afternoon and an hour or so in the early evening. Her bedtime is still between 7:00 - 7:30 PM.

The crib mattress is however about to be lowered. She is getting a little too

curious with the railing and her strength is growing by the day.

Movement

Claire is scooting! Or rolling. Or scoot-rolling. She's on the move. She sees something she wants on the floor and figures out a way to get there. This may entail crossing treacherous toy terrain and showing a few sock monkeys and stuffed giraffes who's boss. Claire and Mommy have yet to go head-to-head on this boss business, but I see a conversation or two in the future.

She sits unassisted for almost several minutes unless she's uninterested and would rather stand. Then she just gets mad.

This girl still loves to stand. She loves her walker although we do limit the time she spends in it to make sure she's spending more on tummy time and learning to crawl. Side note - it really hurts to have ones toes run over by a baby walker.

Play

Play time gets more and more fun! She can now pick up most toys with intent. Her favorite toys are the Melissa & Doug fish and her rings. She spins spin toys, pulls pull toys and shakes rattles. Of course, most of these toys are still going in her mouth.

Books are still a favorite. She leans over the side of the rocking chair to signal that she wants you to read another book. I have to cut her off. Bookworms still need naps.

The best thing? She laughs! Claire likes it when Mommy gives her zerberts or makes funny noises.

She is now singing. I know, I know...singing, right. Well we think she is. She has always loved us singing to her and now she makes sweet little coos and sighs musically. It's so sweet. She would rather sing talk than eat her bottle. And this girl likes to eat!

She is incredibly interested in our small dog, Bo. She scoots around in a circle as he walks around, following him with her eyes everywhere and smiling the whole time. I feel like she wants to make friends. Only, Bo is a little disinterested. She's handling the mild rejection fairly well and continues to persevere in pursuing her little friend. It's so sweet. Keep trying baby, he'll come around.

Growth

Her 6 month appointment is next week so we will get the full update at that time. A few of the things that we have noticed are that her hair is thicker, she seems to be Jolly Green Giant long all of the sudden and she has lost the infant look completely. Wheh! Insert bittersweet Mommy Tears here.

We have pulled out all of our 6-9 month gear and are in a lot of just plain 9 month. More Mommy Tears.

Also to report, we have teeth - two to be exact! I can't say those days weren't rough, but she handled it like a champ. Mommy and Daddy were not prepared for teeth quite yet, but at least we've got those first two bottom teeth under our belt.

A little sad news to report is that Claire apparently has allergies. We went for a walk on the first day that yellow pollen blanketed everything and boy did we pay for it. An hour or so after getting home her nose was so stopped upped and she would sneeze over and over again. So sad! It took her a week to get over it. But there was a silver lining! Lots of snuggles for Mommy and Daddy! We have an active little girl and those moments are
increasingly less so we'll take it!

Joey and I are having so much! Each new stage has its challenges, but there are infinitely more joys at every new turn. On the 7 month horizon (Oh, that sounds way too old!) we're looking at crawling, maybe more teeth...who knows! Whatever it is, we're ready for it!

The Uber Late Five Month Update

Well, I just keep getting later and later with these updates. Technically she is at this moment about 5 1/2 months old, but I'm going to stick to the five month time frame in the update.

Eating

This girl loves to eat! She has four 7oz. bottles each day. Guess what we also did this month? Began introducing solid foods! Yay! I don't know why, but I was super excited to get to start introducing real food. Maybe it's because I like to eat so much and I wanted to pass this on to my daughter. Oh dear.

We are skipping out on cereals and starting with veggies instead. Claire's first food was avocado. I can't say that she loved it, but after a few days she started to get the hang of it. She wanted to grab the spoon. I told you - I think she may have control issues like her mother. 

Her second food was sweet potato. She seemed to like it more than avocado, but who knows if she was just starting to get used to the whole solids and spoon feeding thing. I mean, that's a lot of change! No sucking involved, there's the texture and the taste thing. It's got to be weird.

Sleep

Not really any new developments here. Sleeps from 7:00-8:30 PM until about 6:30-7:00 AM. She naps fairly well. We're loosely on the two hours of play and two hour nap schedule for the most part.

Her naps are 1 1/2 - 2 hours long until around 4:30 or 5:00 PM when she takes a 30-45 minute nap before we start the final feeding and bedtime routine.

Movement

There's no slowing this girl's roll. Claire's main method of movement is rolling to wherever she wants to go. There was a time in my own life where the somersault was my means of transportation. Like last year. Kidding. Anyway, I'm wondering if that will be in our future.

She loves to sit and stand, but only if there's an element of movement such as kicking or waiving arms around. Oh, and she likes to do it on her own. Oh, and she can't do it on her own. It's a great mix.

Actually, she can sit on her own for about a minute or two. She's pretty proud of herself. She has started scooting a little, but just hasn't quite realized that she's one scoot away from the whole world - being our house - opening up to her.

She loves her activity gym and jumps to her heart's content. This girl is a jumper. If she's in the standing position, there will be jumping and you will have bruises from said jumping the next morning. Have I mentioned that she's really strong? Do not be fooled. Yes, she is a beautiful girl but there is a Hulk Baby underneath those sweet cheeks! She beats her Mom up on a daily basis.

Also, she is not into her Bumbo. She seems to find it constricting. She arches her back and kicks her legs. The Bumbo is officially out.
 

Play

Her fine motor skills are really coming along! It's so fun to watch her purposefully pick up objects and put them straight in her mouth. It's where all the great toys go. Actually, she's an equal opportunity nawer. Fingers, toes - and they don't even have to be hers. (FYI - we don't let her chew on other people's toes - I know you were worried)

Her favorite toys are those that make noises. Specifically she likes things that shake. It's pretty much shake, rattle and roll around the play mat.

She is really into her Sophie and pretty much any teething toys.

This girl loves to listen to Mom and Dad sing! Her favorite songs are Jesus Loves Me, You Are My Sunshine and If You're Happy & You Know It. We sing all the time. It always makes her stop whatever she's doing and smile. She has the best smile. It will light up your day. This is why we sing all the time - we want to see it.

Reading is a favorite. We sit in the rocking chair with her Lovie or blanket and read the same five books over every few hours. She tries to turn the pages...with her feet. Should I be concerned that she's gotten the purposes of her hands and feet confused? I guess if she starts grabbing at the spoon with her foot we have a problem. I'll let you know. She gets the biggest smile on her face when you read the book with animal sounds and it's time for the cow to moo or the chick to cheep. And of course, because of this Joey and I randomly moo or cheep throughout the day. It's the whole smile, light up your life thing. We just can't get enough.

Growth

Since we didn't have a pediatrician check up I'm not really sure how much weight she's gained or in height, but whatever it is it's more than Mom is ready for! No more 3-6 month clothing around here. We're all about 6-9 months! Wheh!

During the 2 1/2 weeks into her fifth month, a lot has changed! Can't wait to see what happens before 6 months. Have I mentioned how fun it is to be Claire's mom?

Claire's Four Month Update

One of my favorite things to watch is Claire experiencing new things. I love how her little eyes widen with the joy of discovery. From three to four months it's been all about discovery.

Weight: 14.8 lbs.
Height: 25.75 inches (93%)

Talking
I mentioned in her 3 month update that I thought she would be a Chatty Kathy. This has been confirmed. Claire wakes up at 3AM often and "talks" to herself for nearly an hour. She is also doing this weird guttural/Aboriginal music thing where she growls at long intervals. Joey thinks it's slightly creepy. I think she's trying to sing. It's the kind of singing only a mother could love. Thankfully, she also has the sweetest coos. It balances out the Aboriginal.

Rolling
Claire began rolling from back to tummy with a few tummy to backs for good measure at 3 months and one day. Yes, literally the afternoon I posted her 3 month update on this blog the girl decides she's going to speed everything up and throw her mommy and daddy into a panic. The first time I barely caught it. She was in her crib and I saw it happen on the video monitor. She did it once and never looked back. Now she's never on her back long before she's rolling over and...

Scooting
Shortly after mastering the roll, Claire became very mad about being stuck in one place. She rolls or inches her way around her crib and play mat. She really wants to sit on her own and crawl, but of course she can't do either and this makes her really frustrated. She looks like she's swimming on dry land as hard as she's trying to crawl. She made it off of her play mat for the first time while I wasn't looking. Immediately every cord, outlet, plug, choking hazard, etc. came into my view. Baby proofing starts now.

Grasping
She loves to go after and hold things. Pretty much anything that she can get her hands on goes in her mouth. There must be some kind of gravitational pull in that area.

Kicking
Claire has always loved baths, but now they have become an athletic event. I put a rubber duck in her tub by her feet and she begins the game of how hard can I kick the ducky to make it jump out of my tub while getting mommy as wet as possible in the process. Daddy is a little nervous that she's going to be a soccer player which isn't really his thing, but we all know that it wouldn't matter what she played as he would be at every practice and game cheering her on. But wouldn't that be funny?

Sitting
She's able to sit up with a little support. She has liked to sit in her Bumbo until the last week. She must have heard she was four months old. Now she's trying climb out of the sides as you can see above. Boy, are we are in for it!

Teething
I think this is around the corner. We go through about 8 bibs a day. They are drenched! At her four month check up the pediatrician said her gums were swollen. I'm a little nervous. Not sure what to expect.

Miss Independent
She wants to do everything on her own. From holding her bottle, sitting up, standing, etc. - she wants to be able to do it herself. And of course, she can't do any of it herself yet. At what point do babies learn patience? Ha!

We are starting solids shortly. I'm so excited! Now when we eat we're being watched. I think she knows we're holding out on her. Claire is so much fun. She's sweet and I love that her little personality is really starting to come out. I'm hoping that Claire belly laughs are in next month's update!

A Few of Mom's Favorite Things | 0-3 Months

I'm about to blog about my favorite baby items. I guess there is no denying it - I've become a Mommy Blogger. You just can't help it!

I have a few friends that are becoming first time parents in the next nine months and have asked what to put on their registry. First off, everyone has different lifesaver from what I can tell. The trick is finding out which one will work with your little one. Second, there are plenty of lists that contain all the necessities, but the items below are things that we love and worked for Claire. Are they necessary? Nope, they just made our life easier during the first three months. What new parent couldn't use a little bit of easy?

There are items on the list that Claire grew out of at three months. This may seem like a short time, but in baby parent time this is a lot! A fussy or trying phase may only last a week, but it feels like it's been going on for a month. Again, this is just a list that worked with our little girl and we all know each baby is different.

Rock'n Play

Claire slept by our bed in the Rock'n Play for the first 2.5 months. To add, she was back in it for a few nights while we were troubleshooting a safe sleeping option once she learned to roll. It's lightweight, easy to pack up and go and it's the baby is on an incline so it helps with reflux. I think it should have been called a Rock n Sleep. Not really sure where the "Play" comes in, but for us we loved it as a sleeper.

Small portable changing pads

I did not have these on my registry. My friend Amy, also a new mom, mentioned how much she loved having these around. On her recommendation, I got them a few weeks before Claire arrived. They have been wonderful. I put one on top of the changing pad and it's saved me many times from having to strip and wash the changing pad cover. Also, when she slept in our room I kept one on hand to change her in the middle of the night on our bed. This saved us from having to change our sheets in the middle of the night many times! Lastly, I always have one in her diaper bag just in case.

Gripe Water

Supposedly this product is a hit or miss with many, but it was a true lifesaver for us. We buy the Little Tummies brand. During the first month of her life our little one had major tummy issues. She screamed throughout the night in pain. I don't know if her digestive system matured or if it truly was Little Tummies, but this got much better when we used this product. It has also worked 50/50 on the hiccups, which can really put a kink in your bed or nap time routine.

Miracle Blanket

Claire must have been working on her swaddle breaking skills in the womb because that girl could break out of a nurse-wrapped swaddle in 8 seconds flat. We tried the velcro swaddle blankets, double blanket swaddling, different swaddling methods, etc. Finally, we threw in the swaddle blanket and called it a day. Swaddling just didn't work for us. Then my friend Liz, a veteran mom of three boys, suggested the Miracle Blanket. We were skeptical, but that first night in the Miracle Blanket Claire slept 6 hours straight! We bought one in every color.

Sound Machine

We have three. Two travel machines and one that stays in her room and plugs into an outlet. The travel machines are perfect for helping her sleep while we're running errands and drown out the noise. The travel machines both have timer settings and as they are battery operated they will turn off after a certain time. The one that stays in her room doesn't have a time limit. Prior to having the latter, we would have to sneak back into her room to turn it on.

Flannel burp cloths

This is just a short and simple reason: I like 'em and they don't slip. They stay on your shoulder so you don't get slobber or spit up on your shoulder, thinking you're covered only to find that your burp cloth has fallen away.

Puj tub

We loved this tub! It probably wouldn't work for everyone as it depends on the type of sink you have, but it's great for a number of reasons. First, it saves a lot of space and you can fold it up and put it in the closet. It's great for travel for the same reason. Second, it fits in your sink (in our case we used the bathroom sink) and allows the water to cycle out so that the water stays clean. Third, you don't have to hold your baby to keep them steady while bathing. Claire just outgrew the Puj (she's longer than average) and we have use the standard baby tub. My back wishes we would not have outgrown the Puj.

Aden & Anais blankets

Who doesn't love these? They are the perfect weight especially if you live in the South. I use them to keep her warm or just to keep the sun out of her eyes while in her stroller. Also, the prints are so cute. I have two with us at all times.

Boppy

Yes, it saves your arms while holding your baby, but we use it as a baby recliner. She hangs out on the couch or bed with us and it's usually where I put her when she's in transition time between playtime and getting ready for a nap. Having two covers is also helpful.

Sidekicks

I got these as a shower gift and had no clue what they were. How frustrating is it for both you and your baby to have to pull the car seat straps out from under them or detangle them before strapping them in? These little guys hold the car seat straps to the side while you put your baby in the car seat. They just made things less frustrating.

Sturdy blankets

You can probably register for blankets similar to this, but one of our favorite blankets was handmade by our friend Lauri. It's made of sturdy flannel material that's machine washable. It is the perfect play mat and I always know we can throw it in washing machine and it won't be phased. Lauri picked out fun patterns and colors and Claire loves focusing in on a different square each time. We call it our Lauri Blanket. I'll let you know if she decides to put them on the market.

The War of the Snoozes

It was an epic battle. The year was 2014.

The place? C's Crib.

The opponents? Claire the Valiant versus Mommy the Perseverant.

A coup had been mounted by Claire the Valiant earlier in the week. The conflict? Naps.

Do not mistake her small stature and youthful appearance for weakness. Claire the Valiant was a worthy opponent and seemed to be winning more territory by the day.

Her methods were similar to those of William Wallace. "You may swaddle me, but you may never get me to...NAP!" I think I heard her say that.

And then she mooned me.

Heavy resistance began earlier during the day with fussiness and hiccups, but Mommy the Perseverant was on to her tactics.

Come UPS man, barking dogs or children walking home from the bus stop...there would be a nap.

Mommy the Perseverant sent the Recon Team in early to set the stage.

The lights were low. You could hear the soothing sounds of a babbling brook from a nearby sound machine.

The swaddle was snug, paci and bumpers in place and Surveillance was turned on.

Her first approach involved a staring contest with Surveillance. Clever, but not going to work.

Then Claire the Valiant employed the infamous Lift My Legs in the Air & Wave'em Round Like I Just Don't Care Move. Mommy the Perseverant remained unphased.

Would the swaddle hold? Would reinforcements be needed?

The eyelids fell at 2:02 PM.

The paci surrendered at 2:10 PM.

The swaddle did not break ranks.

This was to be Claire the Valiant's Waterloo. The white flag was raised.

To the winner go the spoils - in this case, it was a shower.

Huzzah!

3 Months & Counting

Our little girl was officially three months old yesterday. I haven't updated the past milestones, but I'm going to try to get a lot better about it. Why? Because I'm already forgetting when things happened! Have I mentioned that this is going by way too fast?

Just an overview of what's been going on the past three months...

The first month was very trying. We had eating and digestive issues for nearly the whole first month. Because she didn't feel well she cried from about 8PM to 4AM for the first two to three weeks. Needless to say, Joey and I wondered how we were going to survive if this kept up. Keeping her alive was one thing, but who was going to keep us alive? It was rough.

Things got better around the fourth week. We figured out her eating issues and whether or not it was some of the digestive techniques we learned or maybe her digestive system matured (who knows), the main issues that were keeping her fussy began to go away. Whew!

She started sleeping through the night about six weeks. This was such a blessing! She also started smiling for real around this time. And of course, there was a lot of growing going on during this time frame. Apparently, she is very strong. She began holding her head up almost at Day 1 and shortly after began rappelling off anyone who held her. Joey is already considering power lifting training in a few months.

By three months, the girl has got some skills.

She smiles all the time. One of my favorite parts of the day is waking her up in the morning and from naps. She is so happy and gives whoever releases her from captivity the biggest smile in reward.

Rolling over seems to be on the agenda. In fact, it's created a new set of issues in the swaddling department. We are currently in troubleshooting mode on this one.

She has discovered her hands. It's an obsession, in fact. You know how Cookie Monster is with cookies? That's how Claire is with her hands. 

 

She puts everything in her mouth and slobber is just a natural byproduct I guess. Bibs suddenly became a necessity.

Some of her favorite things include bath time, singing, reading, her Lovie, paci and activity mat. In particular, she loves one hanging toy. Does she love the face? No, of course not. She loves the random material at the top. {See Picture lower right}

 

This girl has also become Chatty Kathy over the past two weeks. She loves to babble and blow bubbles. Unfortunately, she gives herself the hiccups by doing this.

She has also just started holding onto her bottle. I'm seeing control issues down the road...

Each day she does something new and being her mom increasingly more fun. At our two month check up she was 95% for length, 90% for head circumference (read brains) and 60% for weight. It seems like she's had a huge growth spurt since the last check up.

I can't wait to see what's in store for month 3!
